13 dead soldiers from our final days in Afghanistan are the result of TRUMP, not Biden, and here is why:
The Trump administration on February 29, 2020 negotiated a withdrawal agreement with the Taliban that excluded the Afghan government, freed 5,000 imprisoned Taliban soldiers and set a date certain of May 1, 2021, for the final withdrawal. In return for the 5,000 released Taliban terrorists, Trump negotiated the release of 1,000 coalition forces prisoners.
And the Trump administration kept to the pact, reducing U.S. troop levels from about 13,000 to 2,500, even though the Taliban continued to attack Afghan government forces and welcomed al-Qaeda terrorists into the Taliban leadership in direct conflict with the terms of the agreement.
This was a signed agreement and had the effect of a contract under international law. The fact that the withdrawal occurred under Biden negates the fact that it was TRUMP who orchestrated the deal. Trump, who withdrew our forces to bare boned minimums, and Trump who set the timeline. As it was, Biden tried to delay until August to allow for the removal of several American and allied personnel who were reluctant to leave. The fact that Trump thought it was a good idea to release 5,000 Taliban terrorists while simultaneously taking our 13,000 troops down to a mere 2,500 speaks more about his ignorance of warfare and lack of common sense than it does to any supposed achievement.
So, after America negotiated with the enemy WITHOUT the Afghan government (a government that WE INSTALLED, by the way), released 5,000 Taliban terrorists back into Afghan to pick up where they left off, and left those government “leaders” to figure out what to do next, it is no wonder that they rapidly turned to self-preservation and did the same thing to us that we did to them… abandoned their cause.
Trumps latest insult to the memory of veterans was to claim not one serviceman died while he was president (a lie since 45 servicemen lost their lives in Afghanistan under his watch… a shameful insult to their memory). In more recent speeches, he claims that not a single military person was lost in 18 months under his presidency…again a lie and an insult to their memory. The ONLY 18 month period that had NO DEATHS in Afghanistan was the 18 months leading up to the withdrawal, but Trump was president for only 9 months of that… oops… Biden was the president for the remaining 9 months.
The loss of 13 American soldiers to a suicide bomber (very likely one of the released 5,000) is heartbreaking. But blaming it on Biden who simply inherited a bad deal done exclusively by Trump is not right nor fair. Which brings me to Arlington Cemetery and the arrogance and disrespect showed by Trump at those hallowed grounds. Here’s a guy that called WW1 dead soldiers losers and suckers. A guy who claimed that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is better than the Congressional Medal of Honor because you have to be dead or injured to get the Medal of Honor. The depth of military ignorance from a guy who claimed to know more than the Generals is staggering. But I digress…. Arlington Cemetery and Trump’s disregard for even a semblance of respect for the fallen.
While I understand that a few of the Republican Gold Star families invited Trump to their wreath laying ceremony, federal law prohibits campaigning or political photographs of any type. In addition, the cemetery rules reiterate that law. Trump and his staff were alerted to that IN ADVANCE of their arrival DAYS BEFORE. And frankly, unless the Supreme Court overturns that law too, NO FAMILY… GOLD STAR OR NOT has the right or authority to violate the law. The fact that a few Gold Star families felt that THEIR desires to boost Trump at the expense of the other 400,000 soldiers buried there, should somehow supersede the rights of the thousands of other families who want their family member’s resting place to be a place of peace, tranquility and honor and not a political circus act is simply unfathomable to me. Moreover, how anyone with an ounce of honor or respect could defend this abomination needs to rethink what it means to be an American, because THAT is NOT what or who we are. Some things must remain sacrosanct.
