This is hard.
I am a lifelong super-voter best classified as a social liberal, fiscal conservative, centrist. I have never leaned into extremes as I see them as counter productive in a democratic society because the extremes on both sides tend to want it all, all at once, to the exclusion of compromise.
Having said that, I have been following threads, social commentary, and the occasional poll shoved in my face on an hourly basis. I have been writing about “Project 2025” and the Trump “softened” version he calls “Agenda 47” on his website for nearly 5 months. Suddenly, in the last 2 months, it came into the everyday vernacular of the mainstream media and all over the social media pages in the form of memes and discussion groups, blogs, webinars and podcasts. But this insidious attack on our democracy under the guise of somehow making America a better place somehow resonates favorably to more than half of the population. It is disgusting and repulsive to the very gestalt of American ideology and yet, Trump and his ilk have gotten more than half of the population to drink this Kool-Aid.
And then you have the Democrats who helped. Democratic Senators and Congressional people who stirred the country into a frenzy where NONE EXISTED over a 90-minute debate by the presumptive nominee in which the first half was subpar. Yet, polls afterward STILL had Biden in the same neck and neck horse race which continued until the now infamous piece of glass turned bullet from what looks to be a staged event that went terribly wrong for a former firefighter and father, but couldn’t have been better for Trump.
Staged or not, Trump’s former doctor (who Trump has consistently called by the wrong first name when not reading it from a teleprompter) saying it was a bullet wound when PICTURES show it to be a piece of glass from the teleprompter does nothing to quell the doubt of any intelligent individual with fair eyesight. If you want the truth about his ear wound, they should release the actual treating hospital’s and doctor’s report. Conveniently, they simply used a doctor that wasn’t even there but who has a history of hiding Trump’s cognitive and health issues in the past to report on his alleged wound.
Up to that convenient point in time, Trump could not break the dead heat race he was in despite Biden’s poor performance. In fact, evidence indicates that Biden actually got a bump up…only slightly, but a bump up nonetheless, immediately after…until the media, fed by leaks by the Democratic leadership started lighting the fuse of public doubt…stirring the pot until they got it sufficiently odiferous, then walked away to allow the stench to permeate. They often call this a “whisper campaign” so that the shot-callers aren’t identifiable. It’s like a fire-setter who lights the fire, then hands the matches to someone else when law enforcement arrives. It’s revolting and a fecal stain on the fabric of the Democratic party. They and they alone are responsible for allowing Trump his victory, and to be sure, it WILL be a Trump victory, the Democratic Defectors Caucus have ensured that as sure as if they casted the deciding vote themselves. Congratulations! You’ve managed to snatch DEFEAT from the jowls of victory!
Now, I have never been a fan of predictive polls. At best, they can tell you how people will vote ON THE DAY OF THE POLL, not necessarily on election day. A case in point, Hillary Clinton was a 7pt. favorite to win the 2016 Presidential election running right up to election day. In case you don’t remember, Trump won. True, she won the popular vote, but it was nowhere near 7%…it was barely 2.1%, and the polls never looked at swing state numbers. In another case, I worked on Rush Holt’s maiden campaign for Congress in a traditionally Republican District in NJ. Every poll had us losing. We won it with 7 votes. While it was a razor thin win, it was still a win in a district everyone told us was unwinnable because the polls said so. Still, polls can be used to judge public sentiment at a given point in time to help with more nuanced objectives. For example, in virtually every poll, Biden outperforms all contenders against Trump. There are a couple outliers that reduce his level of out performance and in one, Harris is 3 points better but still loses to Trump by 5 instead of Biden’s 8. But that is by Southern California University, in the home state of Harris. I’d expect her to do better in her home state. The only person who is consistently shown to beat Trump outright is Michelle Obama. She has consistently refused to run. If the Democratic Defectors want a winning candidate, she is it. Spend more time cultivating her and encouraging her to run. Barring that, they should have shut their mouths and pumped money into ads showing the stark differences in the types of leadership of both men and what is at stake with Project 2025. This has been out there since 2018. Where was Democratic leadership THEN??? Asleep behind the wheel, obviously.
But it is not just the Presidency that they committed to failure. These same morons have tanked any chance of keeping the Senate or gaining the House. If both Houses of Congress go red, we are, in fact, over. Trump the liar will be ordained Trump the Supreme Leader and Fuhrer of the 4th Reich. This is not an exaggeration. The TITLE might be wrong, but the actions will not be. By now, many people have at least browsed the contents of Project 2025, but few have really read it. And if they did, even fewer would understand the nuances of what it actually means to their rights. For example, reading that they will invoke the Sedition Act of 1807 means nothing to the average reader. You have to know what it means, then view it through the prism of the new EXTREME COURT decisions giving absolute immunity to the President and dismembering our federal agencies ability to perform their duties of enforcement, to understand the ACTUAL EFFECT of doing that. Giving ALL authority to the President to mobilize the military and use them as LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT to arrest anyone who SPEAKS MALICIOUSLY of the Government for treason, punishable by death, and seeing one of Trumps videos on his Agenda 47 webpage where death penalties will be by firing squad, puts a whole new perspective on simply reading, “invoke the Sedition Act of 1807.” That is only ONE such area where a seemingly innocuous phrase or word is used to hide a far more sinister plot. They COUNT on the ignorance of the masses to seize the power they so desperately want. And thanks to the Democratic Defectors Caucus, they are very likely to get it… In fact, it is almost assured thanks to their ambitions surpassing their abilities.
Is it salvageable? Arguably, it is POSSIBLE, just not likely. First, Democrats win when we can motivate a voter turnout of 60% at 55% or less, Republicans ALWAYS win. With 65% turnout, it is a solid mandate of the public similar to Barack Obama’s win. More than that is a seismic shift requiring the Republicans to virtually have to change their name and their platform in future elections. The key is women voters who will be coming out in Florida for the abortion bill and if that bill spurs them into voting, then Dems are likely to win there. Abortion rights referendums and questions are also on the ballots of 7 other states as well, and there will likely be an 8thstate added before November. Those states are Maryland, Colorado, South Dakota, Nevada, Montana, Arizona, Missouri and likely Nebraska. Could a groundswell of women voters vote for the Party that wants to enshrine women’s rights into federal law get a positive bump from those same voters? Only time will tell, but the odds are more favorable than not… but will it be enough. And then there is the 5% RFK drag which adversely impacts Biden more than Trump, a reason why Trump made his deal with him to run to draw votes…which he has done very well. In fact, before the Democratic Defector Caucus got involved in their subverting the will of the people, Biden’s biggest stumbling block was NOT the debate. It was the statistical tie with Trump orchestrated by RFK with what has now come to light as Trump’s help. In a head-to-head match-up, Biden frequently beat Trump, but not within the margin of error. But when RFK enters the picture, he siphons off enough votes for Trump to be the winner, but also not within the margin of error.
There is an ever-thinning path to victory for the Democrats. But without Michelle Obama at the head, it is unlikely no matter WHO the Democratic Defectors Caucus puts in to replace Joe Biden. Of course, that presupposes Biden will willingly step down. Frankly, The premature calls to withdraw over a 90 minute debate against a 3 ½ year backdrop of the one of the most productive presidents in our time has caused most of the media’s perseverance on the issue. And now the polls are picking up on the gradual poisoning of public opinion. This is why I began this piece with the opening, “This is hard.” It’s hard because I see what they’ve done to our President, to our chances of victory, and to democracy. And it was from the INSIDE… a far more difficult pill to swallow.
