What Have You Done For Me Lately, Joe
We live in a bizarre world.
On one side, we have a few Democrats and nearly all Republicans demanding Biden step aside because of ONE bad debate performance for 90 minutes. 3 ½ years of economic progress, jobs creation, unemployment progress, record stock market levels, health care coverage improvements (95% are insured in the US…a first ever!), household incomes are up above the rate of inflation, the inflation is back down to 2.5%, Democratic gains, all the infrastructure improvements, and bringing Chip manufacturing jobs back to the US be damned!
On the other hand, we have silence for a convicted felon 34 times over who repeatedly is caught on tape incoherently rambling off topic, and still spewing long ago debunked election fraud claims. Not a single call to drop out of the race… not even after civil conviction for sexual assault, for defrauding Veterans with his fake charity scheme for veterans, for defrauding students with his fake college scheme, for his shafting of small businesses and employees by his multiple filings for bankruptcy (6 times), for inciting an insurrection on January 6th 2021, for his incessant embracing of white supremacists, or his routine lies about immigrants all being from prisons, mental health hospitals and drug cartels. A prior president who quadrupled the national debt and raised the debt TWO TIMES MORE THAN BIDEN HAS, yet not a peep from his enablers in Congress or his supporters… but more importantly, from the press.
Still, the cacophony of calls for Biden to step aside by people in his own party in disheartening. These idiots that subscribe to the GOP style of governing…that all-to-familiar, “what have you done for me lately” mentality, really need to double check their credentials….of course, that would require that they take the time and energy to extract their heads from their own asses.
And then there is the typical parade of pundits. All the talking heads are giving us their rendition of how Joe could step aside and this candidate, or that candidate could be inserted into the mix and what their likelihood of success might be against the CONVICTED FELON! Sorry, I digress… I just can’t get the idea out of my head that the “Law and Order Party” is promoting this POS, FELON, jackass as their presidential candidate unashamedly and even PROUDLY. Where is the outcry from these same armchair coaches about the incoherent ramblings of Trump (e.g.-“Gettysburg, wow” speech) on a near daily basis? Or his felony conviction and why the Republican’s should be telling him to step aside? But nothing from them in that regard. When the dictator gets elected, history will not be as quick to forget their complicity in aiding the demise of democracy.
All of these talking heads gloss over the history. Not a mention of how removing Biden will ENSURE a Republican win. Take Harry S. Truman in 1952. Here’s a guy that was the presumptive shoe-in nominee as he was the incumbent President; however, after Eisenhower entered the race as his opponent, he was persuaded to drop out to avoid an embarrassing loss. In return, we got a Republican win.
Next up, Lyndon B. Johnson. The year was 1968. The Vietnam war was hot and heavy. The North Vietnamese backed Viet Cong had advanced an assault on the Tet holiday in the hopes of winning their civil war and gaining public sentiment to end it. It didn’t work. But because we had troops there engaged in active combat since 1965, the mood at home was divisive, to say the least. While estimates of Communist fatalities numbered as high as 60,000, South Vietnam lost 27,000 with 2,600 American casualties), at home, increasing n umbers of campus riots and demonstrations, political marches and protests, political division and unrest, worries about our debt of $20 Billion with more to come unless taxes were raised…sort of like today… Johnson was persuaded to drop out.
In fact, On March 31, 1968, Johnson held a televised speech at the Whitehouse in which he made several statements before his announcement of dropping out of the race. Those statements included his worry that there was “…a threat to the dollar’s role as the keystone of international trade and finance in the world.” He also included a reference to John F. Kennedy’s speech to the American people when he stated, “Of those to whom much is given much is asked. I cannot say – and no man could say – that no more will be asked of us. Yet I believe that now, no less than when the decade began, this generation of Americans is willing to pay the price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival, and the success, of liberty. Since those words were spoken by John F. Kennedy, the people of America have kept that compact with mankind’s noblest cause.”
And to all those who shared the “what’s in it for me?” and “What have you done for me lately?” mentality, he added the caveat that if we fulfill our sacred duty as outlined in our Constitution and in Kennedy’s quote, “Our reward will come in the life of freedom and peace and hope that our children will enjoy through ages ahead. What we won when all of our people united just must not now be lost in suspicion and distrust and selfishness and politics among any of our people.”
In fairness, I was never a fan of LBJ. But I respected him. Not as the 12 year old that I was at the time, but as I grew into politics which frankly started shortly after my first letter to President Nixon in 1969 and my disdain for his reply, I saw the level of class Kennedy and LBJ brought to the table and the sincerity of concern and reverence for the office of the presidency and the selfless dedication and sacrifice one must make to do the job. Something I found lacking in Nixon and in Ford. These two men, while they had a semblance of character, seemed aloof and out of touch with the issues and concerns of average America. This is when my political leanings began to take shape. And this is where Biden’s current ordeal takes my writing.
To those fair weathered supporters of Biden calling for him to step down, I say a heartfelt “F*** YOU!” You don’t drain the lake to fix a hole in the boat, idiots. Calm down and shut up. You are either part of the problem or part of the solution. EVERY TIME IN HISTORY, when the presumptive nominee has bowed out of the race, whether early in the primary season like Truman or halfway through it like LBJ, it resulted in a REPUBLICAN WIN. So, you either GIVE UP on your candidate and ENSURE a REPUBLICAN WIN, or you STICK WITH HIM and at least take a swing and have a chance at winning. There are no alternative solutions.
The key is to put Joe in front of the TV unscripted and make his case, just as he did after the debate in NC. Joe does his best work from his heart, because the other side has none.
And for those stuck on the idea of replacing Joe, Michelle Obama is the only way we can ensure a Democratic Victory. But she has declined. However, once Biden gets his delegates that he has already garnered to nominate him at the convention in August, if his performance has been less than able to chip away at the marginal lead of Trump, then I think even JOE would concede that the fate of America is more important than his remaining in the race. Then and ONLY then, he could drop out and hand it to Kamala if she were able to post winning poll numbers or commencing a serious lobbying campaign to Michelle Obama to save the country from a white supremacist, racist wannabe dictator would be in order. Either option would avoid the kind of raucous floor fight seen at the 1968 convention.
Those are the options in front of us, whether anyone wants to admit it or not.
But I’m backing Joe until I see more than just a 90-minute show that was NOT properly fact checked which allowed Trump to spew more lies in a 2-minute eruption of verbal diarrhea, than ANYONE at ANY AGE could possibly correct without rules against it and live fact checkers stopping the proceedings to perform those fact checks. Joe was right…you can’t debate a pathological liar.
I would also state that you can’t cast judgement on a 90-minute performance that followed an ill-advised multi-national global trek and what was obviously some sort of sickness causing him to cough and clear his throat repeatedly. Get him out and candidly talk from the heart. If that doesn’t work to alleviate the noise, then talk to Joe about options. He is a class act and will do what is right to save the country from the threat of a dictator and an organization like the Heritage Foundation and their Project 2025 manifesto.
And for those who wish to vote a protest vote of a third candidate, there is a reason the GOP has provided Cornel West with their Republican Pollster for free. They know that every vote for Cornel West or for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a vote taken from Biden which, in a close race like this one, allows Trump to win. In essence, a vote for ANYONE except Biden is a vote for Trump…so a protest vote is actually a vote for the very person you are protesting. And if you think that Trump would make a better President than Biden after seeing what he did on January 6th, well, there is nothing that can be said here that will fix what’s ailing you. You obviously have an otherwise admirable dedication to stupidity.
Why?
Aside from the obvious 34 count felony conviction and the civil lawsuit losses for sexual assault, defrauding students with his fake university scam, defrauding veterans with his fake veteran charity scam and his multiple Bankruptcies that screwed small businesses and employees while he kept the products of their labors for pennies on the dollar, here are just a few reasons:
1. He refused to admit the Russian interference in the 2016 elections despite multiple scholars and experts trying to tell him so and he went after anyone in law enforcement that tried to go after Russia for the election tampering like the FBI Director, instead, attacking his character.
2. Placing his unqualified family members in top level positions when they had absolutely no knowledge of what they were supposed to be doing or how to do it.
3. He approved an oil pipeline that devastated Native American burial grounds in defiance of treaties.
4. He called far-right white supremacists in Charlottesville (where a peaceful demonstration was met with violence by them) “very fine people.”
5. He appointed an extreme far right (now a convicted felon) nationalist as his top advisor.
6. He violated international treaties and international AND US laws with regard to immigration policies, including sending political asylum seekers back to the country which was persecuting them, splitting up families and actually losing children along the way, and imposing a Muslim travel ban, just to name a few.
7. He repeatedly called Senator Elizabeth Warren “Pocohontas” as an ethnic slur.
8. He DOUBLED his hotel fees and raised his Mar-a-Lago initiation fees by 100% to $200,000 once he was elected President and refused to divest his business holding like every other president before him to avoid a conflict of interest.
9. He refused to release his tax statements unlike every one of his predecessors and his successor.
10. He fired his acting attorney general for refusing to defend an unconstitutional travel ban.
11. He tried to swap Puerto Rico for Greenland because he said Puerto Rico was “dirty and poor.”
12. He invented 3 million illegal voters to explain Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote by 3 million.
13. When Goodyear Tire banned employees from wearing MAGA attire on the job because they deal with the public and not all are MAGA obviously, he used his presidential platform to “cancel” Goodyear by telling his supporters to boycott Goodyear and get better tires cheaper elsewhere. Insecure much?
14. He attacked former prisoner of war Senator John McCain calling him a “loser,” because he got caught by the enemy. This from a guy who dodged serving by claiming he had bone spurs in his feet, and called those that serve “losers” and “suckers.”
15. He made fun of a disabled news reporters on stage.
16. His Hotel Organization received $60,000 for hosting a Kuwait delegation. Trump claimed he would donate the proceeds to the US Treasury…but it became a tax write-off for him.
17. He pulled out of the Paris Accord on Climate Control
18. He stopped funding the UN’s Population Fund which supports family planning across the globe
19. He fired the pandemic response team 2 months before the first case of CoVid occurred and cut funding for the CDC at the same time.
20. On December 7, 2020, he hosted a medal ceremony for wrestler Dan Gable who was to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Trump walked in, said a few words about the election being rigged and abruptly walked out leaving the guest of honor alone with reporters and looking baffled. Class Act.
21. And who can forget the sensitivity he displayed to the citizens of Puerto Rico when he threw paper towels to them in a crowded disaster relief location in San Juan after a Category 4 hurricane devasted the island.
The fact is, I have AT LEAST 40 more instances of reasons he should never be allowed NEAR the Whitehouse much less be IN it. And of course, the January 6th Insurrection leads the list, but I wanted to highlight the little items that many people gloss over but are worth recalling.
