Where to begin. Isn’t that always the question? It’s barely two (2) days post debate and Republicans have taken victory laps holding their king up in the air for everyone to see and marvel. On the other side, Democrats are licking their wounds, quietly calling on Biden to step aside, declaring the debate a nail in their collective coffins.
To be sure, the debate was not Biden’s finest hour… or 90 minutes. Trump had command of the debate utilizing a debate technique known as the Gish Gallop. Similar to the Russian propaganda style known as the Firehose of Falsehoods where a flood of lies, distortions, falsehoods and disinformation is thrown into multiple media outlets on multiple platforms all at once , Trump’s technique is focused on only one media outlet, CNN. Ordinarily, to counter this form of debate where you simply bombard your opponent with lies and misinformation so rapidly and profusely that even a 20 year old on steroids would not be able to keep the pace, you would have live fact-checking. CNN did not. The debate prep team for Biden also failed him. Everyone knows what the lies are going to be … Trump hasn’t stopped spewing them. The election was rigged and he really won. The economy is all Biden’s fault. He screwed the pooch leaving Afghanistan. Biden weaponized the DOJ and the legal system to come after Trump. The war in Ukraine is Biden’s fault. Taxes are going up because of Biden. Not one of these items have a morsel of truth, but they make GREAT sound bites, and if you blurt them out in rapid succession, Biden had 90 seconds or less to respond to all of them… an impossible task. One of the ways I prepped politicians for debates was to tell them to study their opponent’s campaign literature first. Then, come out and fire the first salvo by anticipating what their opponent was going to say based on their lit, and debunk it early…then you don’t have to spend valuable time explaining the lies. Biden’s debate team appears to have failed on this strategy.
American society today is overly concerned on appearance. We live in a society where style over substance is the key to success. You really don’t need to be smart. George W. Bush proved that. The guy had a children’s book upside down for a photo op just as he was being told the world trade center had just been hit by a jet on Sept. 11, 2001. And just like Trump, he had a habit of making up new words for the English language. But, as I said, it’s all about style over substance. Joe Biden is likely the most sincere, compassionate, intelligent, dignified politicians to grace the Oval Office. His integrity is unparalleled. Juxtapose that with the heaving, hump of misapplied orange-goop that wouldn’t know a truth if it hit him in the face. There simply is no comparison. In Trump’s world, him and his ilk ask the question, “what’s in it for me?” In Biden’s and the Democrats world, the question is, what will the rest of society get out of it? I’ve written before about extrinsic versus intrinsic motivations. Those two different questions essentially sum it up.
The debate showcased a man with no concern for the truth. A deceitful, conniving, pathological liar that likely believes those very lies since he has told them so often, versus a man of integrity, speaking truth to the lies. A man that cares about his fellow man and understands the trials and tribulations that life throws at you. The choice is clear. We can elect a liar or an honest man. A convicted felon 34 times over as a national disgrace to the Presidency, or a man who has comported his duties as President and has reestablished America’s honor on the world stage. When the UN erupted in laughter at then US President Donald Trump in September of 2018 when he claimed that his administration had “… accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country,” he claimed the delegates were laughing WITH him, not AT him. The diplomats were later interviewed and each of them said they were DEFINITELY laughing AT him. According to them, they laughed at his assertion because it was so far out of touch with reality and because it was evident that he had no idea how wrong he was and how far out of touch he was. He was the laughing stock on the world stage and had no idea. Is THAT the kind of leader we want? Not me.
I digress. Let’s get into the debate highlights and some cursory fact-checking just to see what level of bovine excrement was being shoveled into the ears of America:
