Look what we found when we drained the swamp!
Look what we found when we drained the swamp!

Just when you think the Trump administration can’t sink any lower, they find a new basement. Today’s revelation that the National Archives—under Trump’s watch—illegally released Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill’s complete, unredacted military records to her political opponent’s allies represents not just governmental incompetence, but a dangerous weaponization of federal agencies against American veterans.

Let’s be crystal clear about what happened here. The National Personnel Records Center released Sherrill’s full military file — almost completely unredacted to Nicholas De Gregorio, a Republican operative working with Jack Ciattarelli’s gubernatorial campaign. This wasn’t some minor administrative oversight—this was a catastrophic breach that exposed Sherrill’s Social Security number, home addresses for her and her parents, life insurance information, Sherrill’s performance evaluations and the nondisclosure agreement between her and the U.S. government to safeguard classified information.

The National Archives themselves admitted this was an “egregious blunder.” But let’s call it what it really is: a potentially criminal violation of the Privacy Act of 1974 that has put a decorated Navy veteran and her family at risk.

This isn’t happening in a vacuum. This is the same administration that has systematically attacked democratic institutions, weaponized federal agencies against political opponents, and shown complete contempt for the rule of law. The same Trump who called fallen service members “suckers and losers” is now allowing his administration to violate the privacy rights of a Navy veteran who earned a Navy Achievement Medal for saving a fellow classmate’s life.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Thursday that he supports a “criminal investigation into the unauthorized and illegal release” of Sherrill’s records, calling it “outrageous that Donald Trump and his administration and political hacks connected to them continue to violate the law.”

Mikie Sherrill served her country with distinction for nearly a decade. She graduated from the Naval Academy, served as a Navy pilot, and transitioned to public service as a prosecutor and now as a member of Congress. Her statement cuts to the heart of what’s at stake: “Jack Ciattarelli and the Trump administration are illegally weaponizing my records for political gain is a violation of anyone who has ever served our country. No veteran’s record is safe.”

Think about that last sentence. No veteran’s record is safe. This administration has now demonstrated that they will violate federal law, endanger American families, and expose sensitive personal information of those who served our country—all for cheap political points in a governor’s race.

This incident reveals the true nature of Trump’s authoritarian project. When federal agencies can “accidentally” release complete unredacted files to political operatives—when Social Security numbers, family addresses, and classified information protocols become campaign fodder—we’re witnessing the complete breakdown of governmental integrity.

This is what Project 2025’s vision looks like in practice: federal agencies transformed into opposition research arms, privacy laws ignored when convenient, and career civil servants pressured to serve partisan political interests rather than the American people.

The National Archives has offered Sherrill credit monitoring services. Credit monitoring. As if identity theft services can somehow remedy the violation of federal law and the endangerment of a military family.

This demands more than apologies and credit monitoring. This demands:

  • A full criminal investigation by the Department of Justice
  • Congressional oversight hearings with sworn testimony
  • Immediate policy reforms to prevent future “technician errors”
  • Personal accountability for everyone involved in this breach

Every day this administration remains in power, American democracy faces new assaults. Today it’s Mikie Sherrill’s military records illegally handed to political opponents. Tomorrow it could be your tax returns, your medical records, or your family’s personal information—all fair game if you dare to oppose this administration’s authoritarian agenda.

This is why elections matter. This is why the rule of law matters. And this is why we cannot normalize the systematic destruction of governmental integrity that has become the hallmark of Trump’s return to power.

Mikie Sherrill served her country honorably in uniform and continues to serve with distinction in Congress. She deserves better than having her service weaponized against her by the very government she swore to defend.

We all do.
